「红色十月」是一艘核子潜艇的名字，史恩康纳莱饰演该艇的苏联将官雷米斯船长，影片述叙他在前往冰封的极地海域出机密任务时，率众叛变，欲往西方世界投诚的经过。由汤姆克兰西同名畅销小说改编，《终极警探》的导演约翰麦特南执导。幕后消息：汤姆克兰西的小说盘据美国畅销小说排行榜多年，但是从来没有人敢动过将他的小说搬上银幕的念头，因为其中牵涉到困难重重的科技场面，也就是这个原因使得《猎杀红色十月》的拍片预算一直追加到4000万美元，制片马克纽菲德说：「早先如果我知道有这麽多困难，我可能就不会同意开拍了。」为了拍摄这部电影，制片公司在派拉蒙片厂搭出了五个巨大场景，利用两座昇降台，三艘潜水艇模型，表现潜水艇在深海中的各种角度，下墬、摇晃，和在受攻击下模拟实景。史恩康纳莱拍摄该片时，印象最深刻的便是关在狭小空间中的酷热，为了营造出潜艇特有的光影，必须不断的排烟进来，「为了保持烟的停留状态，所有的通口都封住了，相对地，热气无法散去，实在让人热得受不了。」专间制造电影魔术，由乔治卢卡斯所设立的特效制作「IndustrialLightandMagic」，负责深海中的景观。在汤姆克兰西的小说尚未于84年版前，马克纽菲德便己买下电影版权，书一推出，短时间内七百万本便销售一空，但花了马柯一年半的时间才找到肯投资拍片的片厂，这期间他几乎放弃想转而改拍电视迷你影集。为了让剧本能令派拉蒙公司满为止，《猎杀红色十月》先后启用了三位编剧，初期剧本为了忠于原着，一直从「正确性」上着手，毕竟这并不是一部《星际大战》那般的科幻电影。另外派拉蒙同意拍摄的重大前提，便是必须先徵得海军同意提供专家意见和必要的支援，亏得86年汤姆克鲁斯的《悍卫战士》为海军建立了绝佳的公关印象，嚐到甜头的军方便欣然同意。马柯和第一位编剧唐纳史都华首先在87年获准登上潜艇出维吉尼亚海，稍后导演和一批演员亦在安排下登上海军基地一艘快速潜艇，在圣地牙哥外海上渡过了24小时，在片中饰演美国潜艇「达拉斯号」舰长的史考特葛伦坦承：「这次的实际航行对我的演出有莫大的帮助。」海军同时支援了一些士兵充当「达拉斯」的船员，至于「红色十月」舰上的官兵则半是由俄国移民担任，其中约半数听不懂英文，当然都是为了符合影片中采用苏联为背景的真实性，这也是另外一位编剧赖瑞佛喀森加入的原因，他加强了原着中较弱的一环，关于雷米乌斯投诚的动机的部份。根据畅销名着改编，描述苏联核子潜艇「红色十月号」航道经常偏轨，引发美国中情局的忧虑，认为它要攻击美国，但情报员杰克森却认为它欲归降美国，到底真相如何
